Title: The Dark Mirror
Medium: Acrylic and moulding paste on canvas
Dimensions: 91.4 x 95.7 cm
The Dark Mirror is a work on canvas by artist Lawrence Flegg. It presents a wide rectangular canvas crowded with thick organic lines, interrupted by a dark circular hole at centre. Each of the lines is about an inch wide and a single colour –either blue, red, yellow, or green. Each line traverses the entire canvas from top to bottom in a meandering and organic fashion. Each line weaving loosely around its neighbours. In the centre of the canvas, a thick disc of black is rimmed by gold. The ring of gold is flat on its outer edge, while the inner edge is texted and rises off the canvas resembling a roughly made wreath of thin twigs that has been dipped in gold and stuck on the canvas. The black disc inside it is thickly painted with brush marks visible in the dried pigment. Lawrence says of his work “I'm a 57 year old with lived experience of mental illness. I use art to change the blackness in my head into colour on a canvas.”
