I love doing particularly drawings and paintings of and around my favourite characters from television, books and movies. It is for me a time of relaxation and happiness.
I love drawing fast – using line and colour. I love doing art with Sheena where I get to try different media and techniques and depict what is happening around me.
Title: Characters, 2020
Medium: Black marker and pencil on cartridge paper
Dimensions: 50 x 70 cm
Chase Klingenspor references famous figures from popular culture in his work Characters. Measuring 50 centimetres tall and 70 centimetres wide. Chase has created a crowd of characters in black marker and coloured pencils on white paper. The characters seem to have been drawn hastily in outlines of short, sharp strokes of black Texta, but they're remarkably precise, the ink showing no signs of smudges or streaks. Each character is coloured roughly with pencil. Instantly recognizable in the top right corner is the titular yellow skinned family from The Simpsons; Homer with his balding head, ring of brown stubble, and trademark scowl. Marge with her column of tall coiffure and Bart, Lisa and Maggie with their spiky hairdos. At left, Grandpa Simpson looks over at them scowling like Homer, liver spots peppering his head. Near him, the porous yellow rectangle of SpongeBob Square Pants stands smiling widely, one hand held aloft. The entire field is crowded with other cartoon figures, including pink skinned people, a moustachioed pirate, a selection of red cats and a grumpy gorilla. Chase says of his work “I love doing particularly drawings and paintings of, and around my favourite characters from television books and movies. It is for me, a time of relaxation and happiness. I love drawing fast using line and colour. I love doing arts where I get to try different media and techniques and depict what is happening around me.
